WHAT IS REAL FOOD?
There are many variations of what people mean by REAL FOOD on the web. When it comes to defining real food for The Real Food Geek, I’m talking about whole foods in their most natural state. Real foods are single-ingredient foods and are naturally rich in nutrients. They will have undergone minimal to no ‘chemical’ processing and are most likely free from chemical additives.
Michael Pollan explains it perfectly.
“If it came from a plant, eat it; if it was made in a plant, don’t.”Michael Pollan, Food Rules An Eater’s Manual, 2009
Real foods include:
- organic meat proteins (free from antibiotics and hormones)
- wild-caught fish (free from chemicals)
- nuts & seeds
- legumes (beans, peas, lentils, peanuts)
- 100% whole grains (pasta, rice, oats, flour)
- organic full-fat and unsweetened dairy (milk, yoghurt, butter, cheese)
- healthy fats (unrefined extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, animal fats)
- natural sweeteners (raw honey, maple syrup)
WHAT ARE REAL FOOD RECIPES?
All recipes found on this site are made using whole, real food ingredients that will give your body the nourishment it needs to function at its best. This will encourage optimum health and natural, safe weight loss if that is your aim.
For the purposes of saving time and preparing quick meals, I DO include minimally processed packaged foods in my recipes but ONLY if they include 100% real food ingredients. For example, tins of chopped tomatoes, beans and pulses, wholewheat pasta, wholewheat flour, extra virgin olive oils, full-fat natural yoghurt, maple syrup, tuna fish etc.
These food items will have undergone machine processing (to make the pasta, to extract oil from olives, to cultivate the yoghurt etc) but will not contain chemical or man-made ingredients.
We’re taking real food ingredients and turning them into awesome meals – including some of the classics that are often desperately missed on strict diet plans.
Recipes from The Real Food Geek celebrate food, focussing on what you CAN eat rather than what you can’t. You’re not going to feel deprived when you’re fueling your body with delicious, nutritious food.
Sound good to you? Yep, me too!
WHAT REAL FOOD RECIPES ARE NOT?
Real food recipes DO NOT contain…
- highly processed foods
- artificial colours
- artificial flavours
- chemical preservatives
- hormones or antibiotics
- refined sugars and artificial sweeteners
- bad or ‘trans’ fats
And, because of this, they DO NOT require you to…
- count calories, points, syns etc
- track macros
- ban vital food groups
- take diet pills
- eat expensively, crap filled, processed diet foods
- starve yourself, resulting in uncontrollable cravings
And as a result, you won’t be consuming unnecessary chemicals, toxins, bad (trans) fats, and goodness knows what else as a result of eating a diet high in chemically processed food. All things that are known to contribute to a whole host of issues including
- weight gain and obesity
- heart disease
- high blood pressure
- high cholesterol
